NJ COLLABORATIVE FOR NURSING WORK FORCE DEVELOPMENT
The Colleagues in Caring Legacy

COLLABORATIVE MEMBERS

The New Jersey Collaborative for Nursing Workforce Development was formed in the fall of 1995 as we prepared to develop a proposal for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) call for proposals. The Foundation challenged nurses to break down the historic barriers that have traditionally separated nursing service and nursing education. The New Jersey proposal was selected to become one of the 20 national sites, called Colleagues in Caring (CIC), funded to develop a regional collaborative to address nursing workforce issues. The Foundation also asked the Collaboratives to seek matching funds from local stakeholders and to develop a plan for sustainability.

New Jersey successfully raised matching funds from employers and educators of nurses through-out the State. As a result, the project was funded from July 1, 1996 to August 1, 2002. The grant funds supported a Project Director and a part-time support person. However, the work of the project was done by many, many volunteers and outcomes focused on: data collection and analysis, education mobility, competency-based practice, and a plan to sustain the work of the project.

The Collaborating Center for Nursing is the outcome designed to sustain and expand the work of the CIC project. Although 13 states now have some form of a Center for Nursing to address workforce issues, only New Jersey has a Collaborating Center. The “Collaborating” acknowledges the impact of the CIC’s work in bringing together nurses from all walks of the nursing community. The following were charter members of the New Jersey Colleagues in Caring Collaborative. Their legacy rests in the Center and provides the foundation for the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing.
