The Report to the Governor from the Advisory Council

The report of The Advisory Council for the Promotion of the Profession of Nursing in New Jersey has been released by Acting Governor Codey. In 2002, Acting Governor John Bennett signed an executive order establishing The Advisory Council for the Promotion of the Profession of Nursing in New Jersey. Dr. Geri L. Dickson and Ms. Jo Anne M. Penn co-chaired the Council, comprised of 11 public members and 7 non-voting Ex-Officio Members.

The Council held three public hearings, met nine times, reviewed the literature, and sought nursing experts to present the latest information on key issues in the development of the nursing workforce. The report, “Remedies for the Nursing Shortage,” identifies the 29 recommendations of the Council, including 12-top priority recommendations to address the nursing shortage. Of the 12 priority recommendations, six address issues relating to retaining nurses, three relate to the recruitment of nursing students, and three provide ways to increase the educational capacity of New Jersey nursing schools.

Although most of the recommendations were supported unanimously by Council members, some were approved by a majority of the members. Watch for further information regarding the outcomes of the report. Thank you for your interest in nursing.
