Are You Looking for Professional Advancement through Formal Education?

As an RN looking to education as a means of educational mobility, you have a variety of options. Full time or part time study is available and New Jersey has an articulation model that facilitates educational mobility for LPNs to become RNs and for RNs to earn a BSN. Please check out the New Jersey Revised Articulation Model for general requirements and the schools found there for specifics.

Another option is to attend a school that offers an advanced track from RN to MSN. Check with the individual schools in the New Jersey Revised Articulation Model to see if they offer that option. It would allow you to take some courses at the master’s level while you are working on your BSN. For example, it is possible to take courses such as Nursing Theory or Nursing Research at the graduate level, inside of at the undergraduate level, and the courses would count for both undergraduate and graduate work. Generally speaking, specialization in nursing occurs at the graduate level. If you know you are interested in graduate education, check with the BSN schools to see what they offer.

If you have a BSN, you may want to think about graduate school. It is possible to earn a master’s in nursing, which prepares you to sit for a certification examination to become an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). In New Jersey, an APN, either a Nurse Practitioner or a Clinical Nurse Specialist, can work in collaboration with a physician in a primary care or inpatient settings. An APN is eligible for prescriptive privileges and prescribe medication with the collaboration of her/his collaborating physician. Becoming a nursing faculty, nursing administrator, or even earning a Ph.D. are other options for the master’s in nursing prepared nurse.

If you have an inquisitive nature and a bent for finding answers to clinical questions through research, check out the two doctoral programs offered to RNs in New Jersey. Rutgers College of Nursing offers a Ph.D. in nursing theory and research. UMDNJ School of Nursing offers a Ph.D. in Urban Systems, a joint program with Rutgers and NJIT. The doctoral programs provide even greater career opportunities in research, education, or advanced clinical practice. Check out this web site www.njha.com/healthrecruitment/careerAdv.html for additional career opportunities and requirements.
